Ned Pines, a paperback novel publisher, formed the Standard Comics imprint in 1939, not long after a certain Man of Steel changed the face of the publishing industry. Standard acted as a parent company for two lines of comics, Nedor and Better, which held their own in the insanely competitive hero comic field with bright covers, a wide range of genres, and characters that were "familiar" enough to attract attention but eclectic enough to gain a cult following. Amongst their most popular and best-remembered titles is Thrilling Comics, an anthology that lasted over a decade (a huge achievement at that time), and which was home to a dizzying smorgasbord of heroes and heroines, including a certain Doctor Strange (no relation), Princess Pantha (an amazing and entertaining Sheena-wanna-be), the Ghost (an occult investigator inspired by Dr. Fate and later revived for America's Best by the legendary Alan Moore), and American Crusader (an oddball mashup of Superman and Captain America who became a cult favorite of WWII collectors).
This incredible copy from the Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree has clean off-white pages and the deep colors for which this collection is known. The Mile High Collection is the pedigree against which all others are compared. Discovered in 1977, the collection spans the period between the 1930s and 1956 and is known for the excellent quality of the books, many of which are the best examples known. The comic showcases the first appearance of genius inventor Dr. Strange and the very reason for his existence, the Faceless Phantom. The colors on the comic are vividly deep, as expected from this pedigree.
