Basil Wolverton is one of the great maniacs of comics, his intense, lovingly rendered, obsessively detailed crazy concepts delighting fans of the weird and unusual throughout the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages, and this is probably the most famous example of his cover work, a teeming, mind-blowing explosion of weirdness that can never be unseen. The disturbingly hollow sockets and slithery shape of the creature at large is classic Wolverton, as is the cityscape itself, which manages to somehow be sturdy, pliable, and amorphous all at once. One of the all-time top five pre-code horror covers, and a perennial favorite with collectors.Usually offered in battered condition, this stellar copy is tied for highest graded, and boasts incredible gloss and deep, rich colors. Pre-code horror is once again red hot and we expect this to be a sleeper hit of the auction.
