L.B. Cole EstateYou are viewing an original cover proof from a comic book created by legend Leonard Brandt Cole. What's a cover proof you ask? They are the very first printed covers that roll off the printing presses at the plant. The print run is stopped and the cover proofs are sent back to the comic book publisher for the approval of the editor. The editor will check for any errors in color, wording or artwork. After reviewing the cover proof the editor will ok the cover and the book is printed. The proofs are usually saved as references, as LB Cole did with these. Aren't we lucky! It is interesting to note that editors usually changed the look of the book including background colors each month to avoid confusion at the newsstand. If it looked too much like last month's issue, the news dealer might think they are extras from the previous month and not put it on the shelf!

His career began in the early 1940s and he was a cover artist on titles like Suspense Comics, Terrific Comics, Mask Comics and Contact Comics. His dynamic perspectives, incredible detail, uniquely vibrant color usage and eye for the dramatic are evident throughout his career on a countless number of classic covers.
