DESCRIPTION
BY WILL EISNER. An ominous preview from page 2 of the first story "Taneo the Saboteur" in an early Eisner (signed) piece. Twice-up.

Will Eisner's career spans groundbreaking early work in newspaper comics to contemporary graphic novels. He has been cited as an inspiration by comics creators from all corners of the genre. His work on The Spirit became Eisner's proving ground for some of the most innovative work in the genre.

During 1939, just prior to his start on The Spirit in December of that year, Eisner worked for "Busy" Arnold's Quality Comics titles: Smash, National, Military, Uncle Sam, etc. During 1939, he used one strip to help establish the cinematic camera angles, atmospheric lighting effects and creative storytelling techniques that were to distinguish The Spirit, that strip was Espionage in Smash.

This page, from 1939, has the signature Eisner techniques: low angle two shot, long shadows and dramatic lighting that he would incorporate in the coming months when he commenced work on The Spirit. This page is one of the earliest comic book pages of Eisner's work still in existence with only an earlier page from Smash #4. The page is in excellent (fine) condition and measures 15.5" X 22.25".
