classic Shelly Moldoff cvr; origin & 1st app of Green Lantern (Alan Scott); Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)Railroad engineer Alan Scott stumbles upon a magical lantern which speaks to him and offers him unimaginable power. Scott fashions a ring from the lantern, and begins a lifelong career as a superheroic defender of justice, as the mighty Green Lantern! With all the hubbub and hullabaloo over this character of late, it's refreshing to see that folks are aware of the original GL, whose bracing adventures added both mystical pizazz and streetwise grit to the DC character stable. Dependable craftsman Sheldon Moldoff lends a moody air to the colorful hero's debut appearance, and the atmospheric cover jumped out at newsstands and grabbed readers, and the GL mythology hasn't let go since. Without this issue and this story, the cosmic scope of DC's hero universe may never have been established, and with this character, DC proved that wide variety of characters with a smorgasbord of styles could very successfully compete on the increasingly hectic hero comic market. Possibly the toughest of all Golden Age DC keys, this is a book for the true connoisseur.Like many books that were hot in the pre-CGC era, many copies of this historic issue were "fixed" by overzealous collectors and well-intentioned dealers, making it a very tough book to find in presentable condition without restoration. Seeing a blue label sitting over this book, therefore, sets any serious Golden Age collector's heart aflutter. Sure to attract a lot of heat, and surely one of the crown jewels of this highly anticipated auction.
Overstreet 2012 FN- 5.5 value = $50,000.
This copy is from an original owner collection from upstate New York. The octagenarian collector bought all of his prized comics off the newsstand. Relatives of the collector were worried that he had thrown all his comics away years ago. After they recovered the comics it took five years to convince the owner to sell. He finally decided to due to health concerns. It was very important to him that the books find their way into a collection where they will be appreciated.
