1st appearance of Green Lantern (Alan Scott) w/ origin; classic Shelly Moldoff cvr; Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)

All-American Comics #16 is a vital Golden Age grail as the first appearance of the Green Lantern. The character would quickly become a fan favorite, with Alan Scott landing his own Green Lantern solo book the next year, in addition to becoming a regular presence in All-Star Comics and Comics Cavalcade. The legend of the Green Legend begins here, though, as engineer Alan Scott survives the wreck of a sabotaged train to find a magical lantern which offers him unimaginable power. Scott fashions a ring from the lantern's otherworldly material (technically, it's an alien orb that fell to Earth as a meteor) and begins a lifelong career as the mighty Green Lantern!

Green Lantern would become one of the biggest titles in the All-American Comics line, which was brought into the DC roster with Issue #18. (His sidekick Streak the Wonder Dog would become popular enough to make the cover of Green Lantern as a solo act.) The book's immediate impact, however, is courtesy of this stirring origin by legendary scribe Bill Finger. Green Lantern also made an impact with Sheldon Moldoff's striking cover, as impressively preserved in this restored 5.0 copy. Today, All-American Comics #16 is recognized as both a vital cornerstone of the DC Universe and one of the Golden Age's rarest finds. Alan Scott continues to have a prominent presence as part of the DC Comics line, and fans will see even more of the Green Lantern legacy as the DC Extended Universe launches the Lanterns series on HBO Max.

Like many books that were hot in the pre-CGC era, many copies of this historic issue were "fixed" by overzealous collectors and well-intentioned dealers, making it a very tough book to find in presentable condition without restoration. Seeing a blue label sitting over this book, therefore, sets any serious Golden Age collector's heart aflutter. Sure to attract a lot of heat, and surely one of the crown jewels of this highly anticipated auction.

Overstreet 2012 FN- 5.5 value = $50,000.

This copy is from an original owner collection from upstate New York. The octagenarian collector bought all of his prized comics off the newsstand. Relatives of the collector were worried that he had thrown all his comics away years ago. After they recovered the comics it took five years to convince the owner to sell. He finally decided to due to health concerns. It was very important to him that the books find their way into a collection where they will be appreciated.
