As Stan Lee explained on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, his original title for this comic was "The Mutants" but the editor in chief at the time didn't like the sound of it. Stan, in a stroke of genius, decided to name the team after its founder Professor X, and thus was born the X-Men. A band of outcasts hated and feared by the human world this team book was almost canceled. It was reborn with a cast of new characters in the 70s which made them a household name and a perennial favorite ever since. Everybody can relate to what it is like being on the outside looking in at one point or another in their lives and that is what draws us to the X-Men. With a myriad number of comic-related titles, over five movies made and many more to come the popularity of this title will only increase over time.
