Iron Man was born of a challenge. Realizing the growing Marvel audience was composed primarily of "hip, and largely left-leaning" high-school students and collegians, Stan Lee decided to challenge himself to create a hero who would be the antithesis of everything the growing counterculture was railing against, and yet still elicit sympathy from readers. Thus was born Tony Stark, an older, hard-drinking, playboy millionaire, whose fortune was built on his skill at designing military hardware. In close collaboration with artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, and scripter Larry Leiber, Lee impelled the new hero into dire straits. Mortally-wounded and captured by communist forces, Stark devised an experimental iron suit, which would not only resuscitate his damaged heart, but also effect his escape. Lee's gamble paid off. Iron Man quickly became a cult favorite, with mainstream audiences a half-century later finally getting hep to Shellhead, thanks to the recent spate of blockbuster movies featuring the character.
