While the superhero craze was booming across newsstands, scrappy publishers like MLJ were looking for ways to stand out from the pack, either by recycling tried-and-true genres from recent years, or creating new twists on existing tropes. In the case of MLJ, paydirt had already been struck with Wilbur, the original comic-book teen craze, leading Bob Montana to pitch his idea for an awkward, girl-crazy teen based on his own experiences and sketches from his teenage years in small-town Massacheutsetts. As with Wilbur, the character's first appearance was an instant hit with readers, but unlike the rather cartoonish and limited Wilbur, Archie's character and social circle were completely relatable to contemporary American youth, and proved to be not only resilient, but arguably the most commercially successful comic book creation of all time after Superman. This first appearance is painfully rare, even more so than the first Action Comics, and invariably sells for record numbers on the few occasions it is offered on the market, and is probably one of the two or three most important comics ever published. A true gem, and a must-have for the serious comics collector.

This is the second-highest graded copy of this seminal key, making it especially attractive because past offerings have usually been in low grades. This is certain to be one of the hottest books in this auction, a can't-miss winner.

Overstreet 2012 FN+ (6.5) value = 32,000.

IMPORTANT: The CGC census lists a 7.5 copy as the 2nd highest copy. This is a computer glitch. There is no 7.5. This 6.5 is the 2nd Highest Graded Copy.
