AMAZING FANTASY #15
CGC FN+: 6.5
This is the Silver Age equivalent of Action Comics 1: an historic, game-changing key issue that acts as a pivot point from what came before, and what came after. The creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this radical new concept featured a passive, neurotic, everyman hero; an unusually emotionally charged origin story touching on issues of mortality and family tragedy; a worldview grounded solidly in a real, recognizable universe obviously our own; and open-ended storytelling that demanded and rewarded close reading and regular readership. This milestone comic has also proven to be the success story of comics investment, growing rapidly and unstoppably in value and becoming one of the few completely bulletproof investments in recent times. This is THE Silver Age comic.
We often joke that it almost doesn't matter what grade an AF15 is, as it's an AF15, and that's all you need to know. In all seriousness, though, lower-grade copies are made available to us and our clientele with some regularity, while copies in FN or better are few and far between. The cheap paper used by the struggling Marvel Comics, the ferocious popularity of the book with youngsters
who reread and traded their copies over and over, and the cruel ravages of time have left many copies looking worn and drab. This explains the wild swing in price that one sees for copies that grade over the 5.0 range -- and this attractive, sturdy copy, with its dark browns, eye-popping reds, and overall strong visual appeal show why savvy collectors hold out for the best possible copy. Culled from the Dallas Stephens pedigree, this book displays the quality and overall rich appearance that Stephens was known to seek out and collect. Amazing Fantasy 15s always generate bidding frenzies -- expect this to be a popular lot in this auction.
