Leo O'Mealia cvrThe Flash Comics ashcan is one of the most important ashcans ever published. Its history provides insight into the madcap and hectic times that were the 1930s as competing publishers attempted to trademark every conceivable comic book title.
In late 1939 Fawcett and DC apparently found themselves in a heated race to see who would be the first to secure the trademark for Flash Comics. DC's ashcan edition dated December 1939 pre-dated Fawcett's ashcan of the same title by just one month and Fawcett, likely not wanting to battle litigious-minded DC (which had already sued other publishers for copyright infringement of its best known character, Superman), backed off and changed their title to Thrill Comics. Ironically, Fawcett ended up dumping this second title too (perhaps because it was too easily confused with Nedor s Thrilling Comics published in February 1940) and ultimately published the first Captain Marvel story in Whiz Comics dated February 1940.
This ashcan edition from 1939 is the first time that the famous Flash Comics logo ever appeared on the cover of a comic book. The first newsstand issue of Flash Comics is dated January 1940.
The classsic shark cover art is from Adventure Comics 41 by Golden Age great Leo O'Mealia and the interior is All-American Comics 8.
