Their classic Captain America Comics #1 already had the First Avenger smashing Hitler in the jaw, and the Golden Age classic of Marvel Mystery #4 features the first appearance of a swastika on the cover of a comic book. The Nazi insignia has become reviled worldwide as a symbol of hate and intolerance, and the editorial decision to include the design on the cover of a comic was likely considered at length before publication. The image of the Sub-Mariner beating the heck out of some Nazis would soon become de rigueur on Timely covers—especially those drawn by the extremely talented hand of Alex Schomburg. This issue still represents the true beginning of what soon come became known as the WWII comic book, an era beloved by collectors and notable for their scarcity.
