Moondog's Dr. Fate Collection
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby kept their Marvel Age hot streak running with the big and brutal Hulk, with Incredible Hulk #1 becoming another vital Silver Age key that's remained a top collectible. In addition to introducing readers to Dr. Bruce Banner and his brutal alter-ego, Incredible Hulk #1 marks the first appearances of Betty Ross, Rick Jones, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross (the latter set to remain a major part of the Disney+ Marvel Universe). The iconic cover image continues to resonate with fans to this day.

Stan Lee demanded a change after the botched coloring process for this book. The second issue would change the Hulk from a blotchy gray to his green-skinned glory. Hulk would then survive his own title’s quick cancellation to keep thrilling comics fans, eventually coming back with a top-selling book and a hit '70s television show. From there, the Hulk’s return to the big-screen Avengers reignited the public’s passion for both the troubled hero and his alter-ego of Dr. Bruce Banner.

As one of the least forgiving of Marvel Silver Age covers, this issue's purple background and highly busy artwork tend to reveal any flaw, nick, fold, or stain, providing some truly nasty looking low-grade copies making the rounds on the marketplace. This copy, from the Moondog's Dr. Fate collection is a true stunner, with only minimal spine creasing, and truly deep, immersive purples and blacks. The menacing Hulk jumps off the cover thanks to its still-rich inks and stunning cover gloss. This is probably the toughest of all SA Marvel keys to find in nice shape. We expect collectors will quickly descend on this one.

Artist Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
