Moondog's Dr. Fate CollectionSpider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was an overnight sensation, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo title from co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. (Marvel still brought in the top-selling Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance.) The book remains one of the cornerstones of comic collecting--featuring the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson as one of the most iconic supporting characters in the history of comics. The book is also notable for including The Chameleon as Spidey’s first supervillain. The shape-shifting spy has been one of the major missing figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is finally set to make his big-screen debut in this year’s Kraven the Hunter film.
Having enjoyed unexpected and encouraging success with the premiere of their new hero in Amazing Fantasy 15, Lee and the team at Marvel rushed their new character into a solo book, wasting no time in taking advantage of what may have seemed, at that moment, to be a fleeting fad. Needless to say, the new property stuck with readers, and the rest is history.
