John Wise CollectionPredating not only the early superhero titles, but also Detective Comics 1, this incredibly rare and historic book was the first annual published by DC Comics, then known as National Periodical. After testing the market with the tabloid-sized New Fun, and the somewhat smaller New Comics 1, this comic helped to cement what would become the standard size for newsstand comic books. The title worked off the prevailing template of the day and featured a wide variety of adventure, funny animal, slapstick, pulp, and fantasy stories designed to appeal to the widest possible readership, much like the comic strip pages of the daily papers that had long driven sales and reader tastes. This ample tome was made up largely of reprints from the initial New Fun issues, shrunk down to what would become regular comic book size, paced to allow for maximum contrast and impact. The experiment was a partial success, as it sold well enough to keep the company going, but it would take some time for publisher Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson to really hit paydirt. Due to the low print run and huge size of the comic, it survives in painfully low numbers.This VF+ copy is in unbelievable condition for its age and size, and is far and away the nicest copy any of us here have ever laid eyes on. This is only the third copy we've ever offered and we can't emphasize enough the historic importance, scarcity, and value of this fantastic find; truly one of the major offerings of this or any auction.
