Gene Colan cover & art; origin retold (cont. from Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1)
Stan Lee devised Iron Man as a creative challenge, seeking to invent a hero that embodied all the things that his youthful readership rebelled against. Thus was born Tony Stark, a shamelessly capitalist businessman whose fortune was built on war machinery and weaponry, a daring riposte to all the political trends prevalent in the late 1960s among Marvel's largely adolescent male readership. This first solo issue of Iron Man was an overnight smash, and with a cover graced with the visionary art of master draftsman Gene Colan, it is no wonder. The incredible success of the MCU has finally made Iron Man a top-tier character, but longtime comic fans have always known that this is one of Marvel's most complex and fascinating heroes.
Gene Colan's work on the early issues of Iron Man continued where he left off in the character's run in Tales of Suspense. In this issue, Shellhead's origin is retold and we get a rip-roaring adventure with battles against the forces of A.I.M. and the evil Mordius. This well-preserved copy colorfully presents a powerful image of Iron Man busting loose from his restraints with vibrant reds and yellows while underscoring the main image with scenes of heroic mayhem in the background. This issue's status has grown along with the success of the recent Iron Man movie franchise and it is a must-have issue for collectors of any age, especially the Iron Age! High-grade copies of this key never fail to attract fierce bidding, even as this is one of the many "can't-miss" Marvel keys on the market.
