Charles M. Schulz (1922-2000) stands alone among American comic strip artists, a true monument of American pop culture. His immensely influential and popular Peanuts strip, which ran an astonishing fifty years, is not only a vital piece of cartoon history, but an indelible artifact of American and world history. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, and the rest of the gang are as much a part of the fabric of the U.S.A. as Paul Bunyan and John Henry, irreplaceable elements of our nation's mythology. As a result, original art from his strip commands record prices, reflecting both the intense love for the man's body of work and its central importance to the history of American humor.

The success of Schulz' creation can be directly attributed to his remarkable ability to project universal adult concerns and frailties through the powerful personalities of his youthful protagonists, garnering laughs and recognition from his audience by giving voice to mature neuroses through the mouths of babes, as it were. This uncanny talent is perfectly exhibited in this daily strip from 1967, in which his beloved Linus, a precocious, prematurely savvy preschooler, indulges in a little air-clearing on a call-in talk show, a format that has grown to become hugely influential in the modern era, making this a uniquely timeless piece of comedy. Also displayed here is Schulz' priceless and revered ability to portray personality and emotion through the bare minimum of dialog. His recognizably folksy, casual style illustrates Linus' concern and attitude with incredible precision and skill, giving him both the weight of seriousness and the adorable lightness of childhood with the use of the simplest of ink lines. Schulz could regularly use the restrictively-limited space allotted to the daily strip form like few others, and this four-panel wonder is "Exhibit A" in showing why he is held in the highest esteem to this day.

Recently, original art by Schulz has sold for impressive numbers. His pieces are often held by private collectors and nostalgists who are unwilling to part with the work at any price, making the ones that do come to market instantly coveted by strip art enthusiasts. We are always delighted to offer the work of this American master for auction. Art is in excellent condition. Note the signature on the piece, '"For Billy with every best wish" - Charles M. Schulz.
