Ed Hannigan pencils, Klaus Janson inksBronze Age cover artist Ed Hannigan is an under-appreciated master of creating dynamic cover images that scream "You want to read this comic!" A genius of composition, Hannigan balances action with clever cover elements (obviously, heavily influenced by Eisner's innovative Spirit splashes); his talents are easily identifiable on this cover in which the Dark Knight is compelled into the role of executioner for his old chum, Superman. This cover is a stunning display of Hannigan's effortless ability to create tension with the simplest of designs; Superman's hunched posture; the threatening closeness of his jailers; the menace of the impossibly huge axe; and the slightly off-center layout all combine to create unease and terror in the reader. Hannigan drew hundreds of memorable covers, beginning in the early 1970s, and was the unsung hero of Copper Age DC comics. His impeccable skills helped push the imprint's comics ahead of the competition for the first time in decades. Famed Batman inker Klaus Janson lends his matchless skills to this cover, furthering the sense of macabre tension and darkness.
Art is in excellent condition. Stat is not original. Comes with a copy of the comic book.
