Highest GradedX-Men #5 follows the youthful super-squadron through one of their many confrontations with their main nemesis, Magneto, and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. While investigating a potential mutant discovery, the X-Men stumble into a trap set by Magneto, but, his evil plot is thwarted by the Scarlet Witch, who is not willing to commit murder for her leader, foreshadowing her eventual conversion to the good side of the Marvel universe. After making a hair-raising escape from Asteroid M the X-Men return to their mentor, who is apparently pleased with their progress and informs them they have passed their finals and have graduated from the academy.This is a beautiful, nearly-perfectly-preserved copy of X-Men 5 that is the highest rated on the census, boasting a classic Jack Kirby cover. A special detail of note, the Scarlet Witch is still clad in her green outfit on this cover, an editorial choice made to prevent the character from blending in with the crimson-cowled Magneto. An issue that has plenty of thrills and far-flung adventure of the style only Kirby and Stan Lee could imagine, this pristine, power-packed piece of prime pandemonium would make the perfect addition to any serious run of X-Men books or Silver Age Marvel titles!

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
Marie Severin was an American comics artist and colorist best known for her work for Marvel Comics and the 1950s' EC Comics. She is an inductee of the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame and the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame. Frank Jacobs, in his 1972 biography of EC publisher William M. Gaines, wrote, "There was Marie Severin, Gaines's colorist, and a very moral Catholic, who made her feelings known by coloring dark blue any panel she thought was in bad taste. [EC editor Al] Feldstein called her 'the conscience of EC."'
