Superman #14 is graced with one of the most beloved and iconic of all Golden Age covers. During the trying times of WWII, every major entertainment field committed itself to supporting the Allies in the war effort, and comics, with their direct graphics, boundless optimism, and clear stories of good and evil, exploded into the public consciousness with their relentless and compelling imagery depicting both the glories and the horrors of the war. In Superman, DC stumbled upon the most iconic, all-American hero of all time, albeit, in the form of an alien from a distant planet. Superman stood for everything pure, honest, and true about the U.S.A., from his idyllic upbringing on a farm in Smallville to his everyman alter ego Clark Kent, Superman simply oozed Americana. Even the colors of his suit matched up neatly with the stars and bars, it's no wonder Marvel attempted to emulate these facets of the Man of Steel with their own patriotic superhero, Captain America.
