From the story "My Friend is...Not Quite Human!In the pre-hero days of Atlas comics, formely Timely, lowly staff assistant Stan Lee, alone and ignored at a battered corner desk, kept his end of the struggling comics business afloat by throwing work to freelancers and illustrators he'd befriended in the waning days of hero comics. The names that turn up on these pre-code horror and genre comics read like a who's who of the Silver Age, and among them, one of the most revered was Steve Ditko, whose deceptively simple style masked a stunning grasp of drama, staging, character, and composition, and who would soon help to revolutionize comics with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and others. This terrific page shows Ditko's gift for both surrealism and verisimilitude, often at the same moment, with surprising emotion and range, and extraodinary control of line and blacks. Atlas horror comics have been exploding in value over the past year as savvy collectors cotton on to their rarity and value, and original art from this period has proven even scarcer and more demanded than the comics themselves. Ditko, especially, has a rabid and dedicated following, with art collectors clamoring for the few pieces that manage to escape the studio of the notoriously reclusive genius.
