classic Batman over castle cover by Bob Kane! 1st Batplane! (9/39)
Detective issues #27 and 38 may get all the attention, but true Bat-fanatics and Golden Age aficionados know that pre-Robin issues #28 through 37 contain some of the moodiest and compelling Batman stories ever published and some of the most dynamic covers of the pre-war era. This issue is probably the most famous and most difficult to obtain as it s adorned with the iconic Golden Age visage of the caped crusader. Dark, brooding, and classic, this cinematic image more than any other captures the drama and crude power of early Batman and easily demonstrates why so many Bat-collectors are nearly fetishistic about this brief but fertile period in the character s history. No serious DC Golden Age collection is complete without this masterpiece, which explains the feeding frenzy that ensues on the rare instances that copies make it to market. The Batman tale contained within this book s pages bears the distinction of introducing not only the Batgyro, a precursor to the Batplane, but also the famous Batarang, a useful tool still brandished by the Caped Crusader.
Detective 31 is only his third cover appearance, and arguably one of his most-memorable cover appearances of all time. This striking Batman image is comparable to Frank Miller Dark Knight or Bronze Age Neal Adams covers in its iconic power. The Batman vs. The Vampire: Part 1 story contained within the book bears the distinction of introducing the trusty Batarang, as well as the Batgyro (an early precursor to the Batplane); also featured in this anthology comic are the typical smattering of Golden-Age heroes like; Slam Bradley, Larry Steele, and Buck Marshal. But the true value is obviously earned by this early appearance of the Caped Crusader, in all his malevolent glory.

This copy boasts absolutely crackerjack restoration and beautifully presents as a high-grade book. The colors pop right off the page and you can almost sense the excitement readers of the era experienced upon seeing the foreboding visage of the newly-minted Batman on newsstands. The bright yellows and reds read well against the dark, gloomy brown and gray imagery. Looming above the gothic scenery is an exceptionally long-eared rendering of a troubled hero that would soon take the pop-culture world by storm. All early Detective Comics are highly sought-after, valuable, and important pieces of comic-book lore.

Overstreet Guide 2014 VF (8.0) value = $82,500.

Artists Information

Joseph Shuster was a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with writer Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1.

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
