While a fan favorite through most of the 1970s, few cared about Jack Russell by the 80s. In this issue, the lovable lycanthrope's nemesis, the mystical Moon Knight, made his debut and quickly became an enduring part of the Marvel mythos and a staple of direct sales titles. Compelling stories by Doug Moench (co-creator of the character, along with Don Perlin) made Moon Knight a keeper. With numerous titles featuring the Moon Knight prominently over the decades following his initial appearance, the Fist of Khonshu is still a huge draw for comic fans. The Moon Knight TV series for Disney+ should alert collectors to the fact that high-grade copies of Werewolf By Night #32 are exceeding multiples of price guide values.
Werewolf By Night was one of the many titles that sprung from the early 70's resurgence of classic horror and monster comics from Marvel and DC. The overwhelmingly positive reader response after his debut in Marvel's try-out title, Marvel Spotlight, made the decision to give Werewolf By Night his own book in September 1972 a no-brainer. Universal monster legends Dracula and Frankenstein both got their own titles around the same time thereby solidifying the great monster trinity! Mike Ploog's art on Werewolf By Night is regarded as the quintessential wolfman imagery of the time and is highly collectible on its own. A fan favorite, Werewolf By Night is steadily making inroads in collections as its relative obscurity, compared to the more-popular Marvel titles of the time, make it a great way for the novice collector to acquire a premium, high-grade comic that is only growing in value.

Besides the obvious positives of owning a 9.6 copy of the first issue, ComicConnect is also offering the highest-graded copy of issue 32, the first appearance of Moon Knight. We've all seen how some obscure titles or characters like Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Rocket Raccoon have taken off in value recently. Books like Werewolf By Night are regarded as sleepers right now so grab these early Bronze Age treasures before they are out of reach, as it is quite possible Marvel will produce films based on Werewolf By Night and Moon Knight in the near future.

Artists Information

Gil Kane was a Latvian-born American comics artist whose career spanned the 1940s to the 1990s and virtually every major comics company and character. Kane co-created the modern-day versions of the superheroes Green Lantern and the Atom for DC Comics, and co-created Iron Fist with Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics. He was involved in such major storylines as that of The Amazing Spider-Man #96–98, which, at the behest of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, bucked the then-prevalent Comics Code Authority to depict drug abuse, and ultimately spurred an update of the Code. Kane additionally pioneered an early graphic novel prototype, His Name Is... Savage, in 1968, and a seminal graphic novel, Blackmark, in 1971. In 1997, he was inducted into both the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Harvey Award Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.

Al Milgrom is an American comic book writer, penciler, inker and editor, primarily for Marvel Comics. He is known for his 10-year run as editor of Marvel Fanfare; his long involvement as writer, penciler, and inker on Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man; his four-year tenure as West Coast Avengers penciler; and his long stint as the inker of X-Factor. He often inked Jim Starlin’s work. Milgrom is the co-creator of DC superhero Firestorm.

Don Perlin is an American comic book artist, writer, and editor. He is best known for Marvel Comics' Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, The Defenders, and Ghost Rider. In the 1990s, he worked for Valiant Comics, both as artist and editor.
