classic Simon & Kirby bondage/torture cover; last Angel cover

The continuing adventures of the Angel, Sub-Mariner, and the Human Torch are the main attractions of Timely’s flagship title, Marvel Mystery Comics, and this is in fact the last cover appearance of the Angel on this book, as for some reason the character never really caught on. Publishers had to be savvy to keep their heads above water to survive in the cutthroat early days of comics, so Timely made the wise decision to shift focus to Torchy and Subby to appease their loyal fan base, and the change payed off big time. Marvel Mystery would become known as the stomping ground of Alex Schomburg before long, but this cover, illustrated by an instantly recognizable young Jack Kirby, who had yet to claim his title of “King” is a classic of the run, one which helped set the tone for the chaos that would ensue on this comic’s covers throughout the wartime era. Anthology fun is awaiting Golden Age fans in these pages, a popular entry in a very important series for the publisher that would one day become Marvel Comics.

Marvel Mystery Comics managed to give several enduring heroes their auspicious debuts including the initial incarnations of Vision and Human Torch. Although completely lacking in significant first appearances or notable heroes on the cover, this is still an early piece of Marvel history and in spectacular condition with a perfectly preserved Schoenberg bondage cover. It s not every day that one comes across a 9.4 Marvel Mystery Comics and this is likely to disappear into a prestigious Golden Age collection never to be seen again, so act fast!

Overstreet Guide 2016 NM- (9.2) value = $9,300.

Artists Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.

Joseph Henry Simon was an American comic book writer, artist, editor, and publisher. Simon created or co-created many important characters in the 1930s–1940s Golden Age of Comic Books, such as Captain America, and served as the first editor of Timely Comics, the company that would evolve into Marvel Comics.
