Firmly a part of the tradition of American illustration traceable through the pulp cover craze back to the early days of yellow journalism and penny dreadful covers, this stunning cover image stands in stark contrast to the bright, yet crude imagery quickly overtaking the newsstands. Dramatic, finely detailed, and richly observed, this evocative imagery was soon to be wiped off the stands by the caped copycats soon to follow in the wake of Superman's shocking and unprecedented success.
