Mike Ploog was quite possibly the man most responsible for creating the Marvel horror craze that swept through the marketplace in the 1970s. In addition to Werewolf by Night, Ploog pitched in on The Monster of Frankenstein, Man-Thing, and even the cult-sensation Ghost Rider. His apprenticeship under the legendary Will Eisner early on in his career influenced Ploog's noirish style, evident on this striking splash page from Werewolf by Night 5. There is a palpable sense of foreboding in this piece as the combination of the rain and clouds with the obvious pain Jack Russell is experiencing merge to create a sense of dread. This piece is the work of a master comic artist. There has recently been an uptick in interest in Werewolf by Night books, perhaps there is some truth to rumors of a TV series or film, or maybe people are just starting to realize what a great time Marvel was having producing these horror books. A potential sleeper hit here, don't overlook this quietly expanding market.
