This moody Mike Ploog splash page from Werewolf by Night 3 is a wonderful bit of composition and framing that acts as a perfect introduction to the horrifying tale within the book's pages. The figure seated at the desk is one Father Ramon Joquez, he will not survive to the end of the issue due to his unfortunate crossing of paths with a sinister book he is translating called the Darkhold, which can be used to summon Chthon, an Elder God -- sound familiar? Ploog is on top of his game here, displaying the sure hand and skilled craftsmanship that kept him churning out eerie entertainment for the youth of a generation obsessed with pop culture. Marvel pages from the Silver Age are rapidly growing in value as savvy collectors are beginning to cotton to the fact that these books were actually pretty cool examples of super-powered horror.
