With the loosening of the Comics Code in the early 1970s, Marvel was able to indulge once again in the monster mayhem that had kept them afloat in the pre-hero 1950s. Readers were delighted, as they were starved for the long-gone macabre genre. While Marvel covered blood-sucking fiends with the public-domain figure of Dracula, a new creation from Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, Werewolf By Night, allowed the House of Ideas to explore lycanthropic mythology. The series, following the saga of anti-hero Jack Russell (oy that name), was an instant success, and allowed a number of horror-centric artists a chance to strut their stuff in a mainstream Marvel title. Issue 9, represented here in its entirety, was a spotlight for cult favorite Tom Sutton, whose quirky, antic style and rich sense of mood perfectly suited the monster boom of the time. His fearless, take-no-prisoners artistry is in roaring good form here, in a tale that combines the vigorous energy of Warren-era horror with the firm and propulsive storytelling that epitomized the Marvel Bronze Age. It's rare that so many pages from one Marvel tale are presented at once, making this an extra-special treat, and with the new interest in Marvel horror from collectors and art fans, this is sure to be the hit of the auction session.
