DESCRIPTION
crm/ow pgs; Ext(P) ct, pcs added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced, re-glossed
#2 (#1); C.C. Beck cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Captain Marvel; Comic Book Impact rating of 10 (CBI)
For almost a decade, Superman's most fearsome nemesis was the superhero known as Captain Marvel—whose saga began with his first appearance in 1939's Whiz Comics #2, which was also the first issue of Whiz Comics. (The official "#1" was an internal publishing for copyright use.) The colossal popularity and mammoth sales of the Big Red Cheese eclipsed even the Man of Steel's, with Captain Marvel moving as many as five million copies per issue.

DC's lawyers weren't happy with how Whiz Comics' debut copied the cover of Action #1. The idea of Billy Batson becoming Captain Marvel by saying "Shazam!," however, was C.C. Beck and Billy Parker's own immortal spin on the new superhero mythology. DC still gathered an army of lawyers to pummel Fawcett Publications, and eventually drove them out of the funny book business. Whiz Comics #2, however, still remains a top collectible, with Fawcett's family of Marvels remaining a comics cornerstone and serious collectible.

This is a masterfully-restored, high-grade copy of an archetypal comic, which features one of the top-ten-most-memorable covers ever. Beautiful, bright yellows and reds pop right off the page in this wonderfully preserved copy. Embrace C.C. Beck's wide-eyed simplistic style in this important debut, a charming and vital "must own" for any Golden Age key collector. This book is sure to please any Captain Marvel fans out there who have longed to possess this important origin issue but found themselves priced out of the market. We expect bidding to intensify around this book, as it will be available to a broader field of those interested in making a serious play for this classic.
