The reduction of this striking piece of comic art down to the size of a pocket did not do it any favors, as the detail and text became lost in translation. Fortunately, the cover illustration is full-size and is widely considered to be by the hand of Jack Kirby's long-time creative partner Joe Simon. Not exactly a cover swipe, but the design gives credence to that theory as it closely echoes one of Kirby's earliest, and most-memorable covers, one involving Captain America, and a mustachioed jerk getting punched in the puss. Nonetheless, this piece, featuring Spirit of '76 and Black Cat springing into action, easily stands on its own as a classic piece of Golden Age bravado.
