The cover to Speed Comics #22 shows the heroic Captain Freedom plunging through the skies aside Allied bombers, descending onto German U-boats. Harvey Publishing employed Joe Simon, under his common pseudonym Glaven, to pen this obvious knock-off version of America's hero, Captain America. Joe Simon's work during this time is characteristically propagandistic and heavily relies on the vitriol felt by the American people toward the Axis. Stories about heroes killing Nazis sold like hot-cakes and with good reason. This piece is in impressive condition and would look great coupled with much of the WWII-era comicbook art in this auction.
