1st Sub-Mariner cvr by Schomburg, bondage coverMarvel was always ahead of the curve when it came to wartime comics, their classic Captain America Comics #1 showed the First Avenger smashing Hitler in the jaw, and this Golden Age classic, Marvel Mystery #4, features the first time the swastika was shown on the cover of a comic book. The Nazi insignia has become reviled worldwide as a symbol of hate and intolerance, and the editorial decision to include the design on the cover of a comic was likely considered at length before publication. The image of the Sub-Mariner beating the heck out of some Nazis would soon become de rigueur on Timely covers, especially those drawn by the extremely talented hand of Alex Schomburg, but this issue represents the beginning of the concept of what would soon come to be known as the WWII comic book, an era of the industry beloved by collectors and well-known for their scarcity and value on the marketplace.
