Creig Flessel cvr/art! 2 stories by Siegel & Shuster (7/37) COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)

Published in July of 1937, this issue features the 1st appearance of Larry Steele. Slam Bradley has been relegated to the stature of a footnote in the history of the comic book, acting as a bridge between the pulp fascination with the hard-boiled detective and the mythological superheroes just over the horizon when this book was published. Like movies of the day, many of the stories were planned as serials, forcing the buyer to pick up the comic monthly while other stories contained therein were one-and-done. Detective Comics #5 is a book that sits astride two eras. Slam Bradley's co-creators, Siegel and Shuster, would soon give birth to Superman, and leave their tough private eye in the dust, although he occasionally pops up in current comics. This book remains a true classic of an art form on the verge of a great metamorphosis.
