Bob Powell art (one pg); Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron begins (4/40)Fiction House, a former pulp publisher, kept the adventure traditions alive when developing their comics line in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The covers of their periodicals reflected their ability to read their audience perfectly -- energetic imagery, violent action, brash colors; all designed to maximize newsstand attention and draw the eye of even the most jaded of readers. This gloriously insane cover is just one such example, and shows why collectors to this day go bonkers for all the Fiction House lineup. Note, also, the beginning of the Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron strip, an early entry into Fiction House's stable of Good Girl art series which would soon become their bread and butter.
