Comic covers such as this, in which Superman seems to be battling against war as a concept rather than against a defined enemy, were common in the pre-Pearl Harbor days. This Superman image is a far cry from the beefy, smiling patriot soon to grace WW II DC covers, and still startles with its raw emotion and power.
