DESCRIPTION
Ron Wilson pencils, John Romita inks and signed; art on vellum, 12" x 15"

This piece, created by a pair of native Brooklynites, Ron Wilson and John Romita, is a classic mid-70's Avengers cover, featuring some of the team's most-popular characters in a dramatic confrontation with Mantis, a Vietnamese superhero created during the latter days of that war. Her intriguing backstory involves the Kree, who trained her to become a Celestial Madonna of some sort. They then erased her mind and returned her to her war-torn homeland where she met the Swordsman, who introduced her to the Avengers. Here she is shown in a stand-off with Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Black Panther, as she defends Libra, a member of the sinister Zodiac Cartel, who had recently revealed himself to be her biological father, and you know how important that can be to a girl.

The strong line-work of Wilson is a great example of the Marvel style of the period, portraying the heroes in a circle surrounding the antagonists as they all seem ready to leap into action, while the influential Romita brought inks to the piece that define the iconic characters. Any art featuring the Avengers is going to be highly desirable due to the incredible success of the MCU, and with the release of Avengers: Infinity War, there will be another jump in value of all things Avengers, especially a piece featuring so many of the series' central figures.

Artist Information

John Romita was one of the driving forces behind Marvel's Silver Age, he took up the reins on Spider-Man following the departure of Steve Ditko with issue #38. Romita's run on Spider-Man would be long and significant, introducing characters including Mary Jane Watson, the Kingpin and many others. He would be a major contributor to the entire Marvel line throughout the 1970s including designing the look of The Punisher.
