Thanks to Detective Comics’ long-running association with Batman, its easy to forget that the title of the book was intended to draw readers in with the temptation of hard-boiled detective stories to appeal to pulp fans. Yes, I know, Batman is a detective hence his appearance in these hallowed pages, but the Bat has proven to outshine the title, enveloping the book’s original intent in his copious cowl. This pre-Batman issue #15 is stuffed from cover to cover with the sort of thrills and chills readers of the early days of comics were accustomed to, lots of crime, tough guy private eyes in smart suits, dames in distress, goons, crime bosses and a little comedy relief sprinkled about. The awesome Creig Flessel cover illustration was sure to draw attention on newsstands back in the day, the impressive run of pre-Batman covers on this title are classics of the form, and imagery like this well-dressed chap being caught red-handed by a couple of coppers, well, they fell by the wayside once the cape and tights crowd showed up. Golden Age collectors of a certain stripe know the true value of these important early comics that served to bridge the gap between the pulp marketplace and the soon-to-be burgeoning superhero fever.
