Edd Ashe paints applied to a black and white stat of the published cover; recreated in 1978; 17" x 21"

Recreation pieces by Golden Age Masters are a very different thing to behold. These legends, by request, would resuscitate long-lost pieces whose originals may have been scrapped, shredded, or tossed out long ago by publishers too paranoid to realize the long-term value of their artistic prizes. In these instances, it's a true treat to see, for example, Murphy Anderson "covering" Lou Fine, or Irwin Hasen bringing the classic cover of Comic Cavalcade #1 back to life. In many instances, these gorgeous pieces, which Jon Berk lovingly commissioned throughout the 1980s and 1990s, may be among the last works of some of comics' finest draftsmen, making them doubly important to thoughtful art historians and collectors alike. With childlike wonder and obvious pride, these legendary giants of pencil and ink spent their twilight years showing off their still-considerable talents in this immortal medium with outsized collectors' pieces such as these, which graced the walls of Jon's personal comicbook museum for many years. Now, they pass on to another generation of comic lovers, who have the privilege of stepping back into the not-too-distant past thanks to these wonderful works. Note, also, the numerous original works heretofore unseen by collectors, which are sure to excite comic art fanatics.

Jack Binder pencils and inks; 1946; matted 15" x 20"
The Jon Berk Collection
After bouncing around New York City's comicbook industry for five years, journeyman artist Jack Binder started his own studio in 1942 which went on to employ over fifty artists, including a young Gil Kane and Carmine Infantino. Binder cut his teeth at Harry "A" Chesler, Fawcett, Lev Gleason, and Timely, during which time he created the original Daredevil, and even worked with upstart comic writer Stan Lee. Binder's studio churned out content for many of his previous employers, and this professionally designed cover piece is Binder's take on Fawcett's Bulletman, a character created by Bill Parker. Bulletman and his sidekick/paramour Bulletgirl would quickly rise to prominence in the publisher's stable, becoming their second-most-successful character after Parker's other hit, Captain Marvel. Golden Age art of this caliber rarely ever comes to market, and Binder's eye for graphic design and his sure hand elevate this piece above the general fare of the period.

very rare; WWII Japanese battle cover
The Jon Berk Collection
In the cutthroat world of Golden Age comics, scrappy little publishers were constantly vying to get in on the action, chasing hungrily after the normous readership generated by the big guns of National (later DC), Timely, and Fawcett. Whatever it took to get noticed, these tenacious small fries would do, and the most surefire way of getting attention was to tug aggressively at readers' patriotism, especially in the early, white-hot days of America's entry into the Second World War. This classic example showcases the crude but effective illustrations that the lower-tier publishing houses would mop up, dragooning hungry freelancers, starry-eyed newcomers, and starving art students into churning out marketable material with startling speed. Thanks to low print runs and aggressive wartime paper drives, very few of these forgotten treasures have survived, making war-era rarities like this a real find for WWII cover collectors.

Rare 1st issue; WWII Nazi cvr (9/41)
The Jon Berk Collection
Highest Graded
The early 40s had no shortage of Nazi-punching Captain America wannabes but Captain Courageous stands out in his obscurity. While this is the first of the run, only three issues of Banner Comics were published before the title was renamed Captain Courageous Comics.
Note, this is the highest-certified copy of this book by a large margin and hails from the amazing Church/Mile High pedigree collection. This comic is exceptionally rare and exceptionally valuable, looking as vibrant as it did on its publication day.

WWII flag cover by Jim Mooney; Rare! (11/41)
The Jon Berk Collection
Highest Graded
Collectors swoon when Golden Age comicbooks in high grade hit the market. NM comics from the 1940s are incredibly scarce and increasingly difficult to find. As this copy of Banner Comics #4 originally comes from the Church/Mile High Collection, knowledgeable collectors are willing to pay multiples of guide to possess a copy from the most-famous pedigree. Church copies always command premium prices at auction. This copy looks like it just came off the stands yesterday, with gorgeous bright colors on the Jim Mooney penciled cover and white interior pages, a hallmark of the pedigree.

Overstreet Guide 2016 NM- (9.2) value = $1,700.

white pgs; second highest 1 of 1! Church/Mile High Copy
rare
The Jon Berk Collection
Like any number of WWII-era heroes, Captain Courageous manifested many of the same powers as Superman. Mix in some super-strength, a pinch of flight, a dash of invulnerability, and a generous cup of snappy outfit and, before you know it, you have one ready-made Golden Age superhero, prepared to fight crime and injustice around the globe. Banner Comics was a short-lived affair, notching only three releases before being renamed Captain Courageous Comics for one issue, after which the titular hero found himself a new home in the pages of Four Favorites for a respectable four-year stint.
The short run of this title and the relative obscurity of the main character make this book a special gem of the Golden Age; why, the stunning Warren Kremer cover art on this Church copy alone is worth the price of admission.

Overstreet Guide 2016 VF+ (8.5) value = $953.
