VF: 8.0
Pg. 11; Bill Everett pencils; 1964; 15.75" x 21.75"
Featuring Matt Murdock (Daredevil), Jack Murdock (Daredevil's father) and the Fixer
The Jon Berk Collection
For a fan of the Man Without Fear, what could be cooler than an original art page from the first issue of his very first appearance, including his well-known origin story. This is an awesome example of comicbook history, and you can be the next owner of this incredible investment piece. The panels on this page skillfully detail the events leading up to the untimely death of "Battling" Jack Murdock, shown here discussing his "boxing" career with the Fixer, while his son, Matt, simultaneously showcases his powers for the reader's benefit. The strong storytelling skills of Bill Everett are on full display here, his twenty-plus years in the industry culminating in the assured pencil-work that ties this incredible page together, while the obvious ink work of Steve Ditko adds a dash of panache to this historical treasure. This is one of the best pieces of Silver Age art from the Jon Berk Collection and we are sure it will see intense competition in this auction.

Cover Painting; Craig Flessel mixed media; 1994; matted and framed 17.5" x 22"
The Jon Berk Collection
Recreation pieces by Golden Age Masters are a very different thing to behold. These legends, by request, would resuscitate long-lost pieces whose originals may have been scrapped, shredded, or tossed out long ago by publishers too paranoid to realize the long-term value of their artistic prizes. In these instances, it's a true treat to see, for example, Murphy Anderson "covering" Lou Fine, or Irwin Hasen bringing the classic cover of Comic Cavalcade #1 back to life. In many instances, these gorgeous pieces, which Jon Berk lovingly commissioned throughout the 1980s and 1990s, may be among the last works of some of comics' finest draftsmen, making them doubly important to thoughtful art historians and collectors alike. With childlike wonder and obvious pride, these legendary giants of pencil and ink spent their twilight years showing off their still-considerable talents in this immortal medium with outsized collectors' pieces such as these, which graced the walls of Jon's personal comicbook museum for many years. Now, they pass on to another generation of comic lovers, who have the privilege of stepping back into the not-too-distant past thanks to these wonderful works. Note, also, the numerous original works heretofore unseen by collectors, which are sure to excite comic art fanatics.

Chesler
VF: 8.0
Charles Sultan pencils and inks; 1941; 18" x 24.5"; part of the Harry Chesler Collection
The Jon Berk Collection
Smaller publishers had to stand out somehow in the hard-fought newsstand wars of the 1940s, and hiring the very best artists and unleashing their creative genius seemed like as good an idea as any. While Charles Sultan's sleek, lovely line-work provided a sturdy, attractive sheen (see Dynamic #2), it was the lunacy of the Dynamic and Punch crime/noir covers that eventually pushed copies and attracted readers. The combination of lush pen-work and garish subject matter made these instant classics, and the work of the sadly unsung Gus Ricca hearkens back to the glory days of 1930's crime dramas and horror flicks, with smoky, surreal imagery and a strong sense of menace. Most impressive is the original cover art to Punch #11, which, even without its striking color work, is an arresting noir image, one that would not look at all out of place on the movie posters of the glorious pre-code era. Chesler covers are cult classics and high-demand collector's items, and these remarkable original works, which have miraculously survived, are among the most memorable of the great Golden Age of comic covers.

crm/ow pgs; Gleason File Copy
"Battles Hitler" classic photographic cover
The Jon Berk Collection
One of the truly iconic covers of the Golden Age, and the title on the cover says it all- Daredevil Battles Hitler! The Original Daredevil was created by Jack Binder and many legendary creators worked on the character including Jack Cole, Don Rico and the great Charles Biro. Dynamic art and spellbinding storytelling make this book a must have for any Golden Age aficionado. Notable not only for its full-frontal propaganda against the Third Reich pre-WWII, but for its Japanese war stories written months before the Pearl Harbor attack! A truly classic book.
Quite possibly the second-most-well-known Hitler cover in comics' history, this book was spun-off the popular Silver Streak title, where the Binder Daredevil first appeared in a supporting role. The character was a success in the wartime era, and went on to inspire the Marvel iteration of the same name once the Silver Age got into gear. This copy of this GA treasure is the Lev Gleason File Copy, which only adds to the inherent value of the book, another amazing offering from the Jon Berk Collection. This truly classic book is saturated with historical import.

1st app. & origin Daredevil by Everett; Kirby cover (4/64)
The Jon Berk Collection
You can tell from the Spider-Man plug on the cover that Marvel had, by the time of this book's release, become known as a hero machine by pumping out high-gloss, high-energy heroes and heroines, which sold like hotcakes. In this case, the House of Ideas picked up a Biro hero name, which had been left to linger, dusted it off and added the enticing gimmick of making their Daredevil a blind lawyer, adding both modern intrigue and a great hook. It would take a while for the character to fully hit its stride, but the dynamic Kirby cover and ravishing Everett interiors attracted readers and established Daredevil as a unique and mature alternative to cosmic adventuring and teenage angst.

Kirby cvr; Fantastic Four app.; 2nd app. Electro
The Jon Berk Collection
Stan Lee is a creator who always hedges his bets when rolling out new characters, as he weaves the Fantastic Four into Daredevil #2 to increase sales and interest in the start-up super-hero. "The Man" deftly applied the same trick a year earlier in the classic, Amazing Spider-Man #1. The strategy works for the story and for Marvel's bottom line, as this is one heck of a jam-packed action fest, and the addition of Spidey nemesis Electro only serves to shore up the overall appeal of this book even further. The cover art by Jack Kirby does a spectacular job of encapsulating the action within, a tale that involves Matt Murdock's attempt to help the FF renew the lease on the Baxter Building, which is interrupted by the electric villain's evil machinations. Did we happen to mention, that the Netflix Daredevil series is a red-hot success?

classic Wood Sub-Mariner underwater battle cover
The Jon Berk Collection
Is it just me, or did anyone else ever wonder if Matt Murdock knows what color his uniform is? When he changed it from the early yellow-and-black design to the monochromatic red suit he is associated with today, was he aware he was doing so? Can his powers somehow detect color? Well, unfortunately, this issue doesn't answer such important questions, actually the only question Daredevil #7 answers with any authority is,"How cool would it be if Daredevil battled Namor?" And let us reassure you, it is very cool! After Namor mounts a failed attempt to hire Murdock to sue surface dwellers for exploiting the sea, he blows a gasket and starts wreaking havoc. Daredevil jumps in to pound sense in to the Sub-Mariner who then makes his way back to Atlantis after a brief spell in the hands of the authorities.
