C.C. Beck pencils, inks and acrylic; 1940 (original art Irv Novick); recreated 1974; 15" x 20"
The Jon Berk Collection
Recreation pieces by Golden Age Masters are a very different thing to behold. These legends, by request, would resuscitate long-lost pieces whose originals may have been scrapped, shredded, or tossed out long ago by publishers too paranoid to realize the long-term value of their artistic prizes. In these instances, it's a true treat to see, for example, Murphy Anderson "covering" Lou Fine, or Irwin Hasen bringing the classic cover of Comic Cavalcade #1 back to life. In many instances, these gorgeous pieces, which Jon Berk lovingly commissioned throughout the 1980s and 1990s, may be among the last works of some of comics' finest draftsmen, making them doubly important to thoughtful art historians and collectors alike. With childlike wonder and obvious pride, these legendary giants of pencil and ink spent their twilight years showing off their still-considerable talents in this immortal medium with outsized collectors' pieces such as these, which graced the walls of Jon's personal comicbook museum for many years. Now, they pass on to another generation of comic lovers, who have the privilege of stepping back into the not-too-distant past thanks to these wonderful works. Note, also, the numerous original works heretofore unseen by collectors, which are sure to excite comic art fanatics.

Bob Montana pencils, inks and signed; 1942; Beautifully matted and framed 17.5" x 22"
The Jon Berk Collection
This original Bob Montana cover from Pep Comics #30 might be the most-unique item in the Jon Berk auction. The cover features The Shield bashing a Nazi while the Hangman strangles a goon from the Land of the Rising Sun. Toss in a swastika branding iron and a beautiful gal in bondage and we've got an instant classic. Bob Montana, the illustrator of this piece, and the mastermind behind everyone's favorite teenager, Archie Andrews, is credited with both the pencils and inks on this action-packed cover.

Flat out, we don't believe there's another superhero Pep cover in existence. "Not only have I never seen one, I've never even heard that one might be out there somewhere," Stephen Fishler, ComicConnect's founder and original art expert explained. For collectors who like one-of-a-kind items, this is for you.

Archie fans are currently enjoying his resurgence in popularity with the new live-action, hit TV show Riverdale. Montana's role and influence in comicbook history can never be overstated. Side-note: A super-cool bonus that comes with this piece is the group of sketches and character studies on the back, likely by Montana as well!

VF: 8.0
Unknown artist pencils and inks; 1955; 14.5" x 19.5
The Jon Berk Collection
The Phantom Lady was the perfect melding of the main obsessions of Golden Age comic illustrators: action, superheroes, and brazen imagery. The twist? Socialite and Senator's daughter Sandra Knight was the tough-as-nails hero, nimbly getting herself into suspiciously sultry danger, then getting out of it with cunning, panache, and no shortage of leggy kicks. Phantom Lady proved popular even after the Wertham-influenced "cleaning up" of the comics industry. Even under the dictates of comic code modesty, our heroine still captivates at center, with her powerful form dominating both the composition and her enemies' doomed figures. While the staff artist behind this piece is not definitively known, their spotting of blacks and sense of dynamism are quite impressive, lending this image a terrific punch. Among the most beloved of cult heroes of the Golden Age, art featuring this titanic character is nearly impossible to find, making this cover a true rarity.

Lou Fine pencils and inks; 1940; matted 18.5" x 25"
The Jon Berk Collection
"Every now and then you find the unexpected, find the 'I did not know that existed', find that item that, for one's collecting interests, is the 'end of the trail'. Rarely do those converge. But for me at the end of one San Diego ComicCon that is exactly what happened."

"Engaging in idle chatter with one high end art dealer, while mooning over some the terrific golden age covers he had, he remarked 'You know, on Tuesday, I'm picking up the cover for Planet 1.' The statement slowly registered. I did not know it even existed. As some may know, I am a Lou Fine groupie, a true 'Fine-atic'. "

"I was dumbfounded, awestruck, and reduced to incoherent babbling for a bit. 'Is it for sale?' The answer was a qualified yes. The owner of the piece wanted to extract some of my Mile Highs and cash. While the parting of some quality Mile Highs was painful, I realized that they were just comicbooks, and in return I was obtaining a piece of history. This was original art by the great Lou Fine, specifically one of the first products of the Eisner-Iger shop for Fiction House, a classic cover of the classic science fiction comicbook series, created a mere eighteen months after the advent of Superman."

"When I finally got the piece, I looked into its provenance, fascinated by its story. Over time, it emerged that one of the first in-house editors for Fiction House, Gene Fawcette, came into possession of the cover along with a couple of others where they remained for many years. Fawcette stated, and Will Eisner confirmed, that while Eisner did a separate layout for the cover, the finished art is one hundred percent Fine. Fawcette lived in a small town in Connecticut, and stored his art in a barn where he had a small studio. Finally, he sold it to a local comicbook collector in his local town, who after a couple of years worked out a deal with a soon to be well-known comicbook retailer. Since the mid-1980s, I am the (lucky, fortunate) third owner of the piece."

"I have been the custodian of this treasure for many years, and am now honored to pass it along to the next lucky owner, who will surely treasure it as I have."

-- Jon Berk

PS -- Jon contacted us shortly after this was written to point out that the seller contacted him several days after buying the piece, offering $10,000 not to go through with the deal. Needless to say...

Attributed to Joe Simon, though it may be Al Avison, pencils and inks; 1942; framed 16" x 17.75"
The Jon Berk Collection
The reduction of this striking piece of comic art down to the size of a pocket did not do it any favors, as the detail and text became lost in translation. Fortunately, the cover illustration is full-size and is widely considered to be by the hand of Jack Kirby's long-time creative partner Joe Simon. Not exactly a cover swipe, but the design gives credence to that theory as it closely echoes one of Kirby's earliest, and most-memorable covers, one involving Captain America, and a mustachioed jerk getting punched in the puss. Nonetheless, this piece, featuring Spirit of '76 and Black Cat springing into action, easily stands on its own as a classic piece of Golden Age bravado.
