1st app. of Archie, Betty, & Jughead
While the superhero craze was booming across newsstands, up and coming publishers like MLJ were looking for ways to stand out from the pack by creating new twists on existing tropes. In the case of MLJ, pay dirt had already been struck with Wilbur, the original comic-book teen craze, leading Bob Montana to pitch his idea for an awkward, girl-crazy teen based on his own experiences and sketches from his teenage years in small-town Massachusetts. As with his predecessor, the character's first appearance was an instant hit with readers, but unlike the rather cartoonish and limited Wilbur, Archie's personality and social circle were completely relatable to contemporary American youth, and proved to be not only resilient, but arguably the most commercially successful comic book creation of all time after Superman. This first appearance is incredibly rare, even more so than the first Action Comics, and invariably sells for record numbers on the few occasions it is offered on the market. This is probably one of the two or three most important comics ever published.

This key belongs in a category all to itself. It's one of those books that we're lucky to see every few years, and whose rarity and legendary status causes ripples throughout the office as we clamor to get a chance to look at this elusive treasure. One of the scarcest of major Golden Age keys, this first appearance of Archie Andrews has attained iconic status in recent years, as collectors have cottoned to its importance, value, and scarcity. Bob Montana turned his gangly adolescent past into universally-relatable four-color fodder, launching an entertainment juggernaut in the process.

RARE; 1st Archie cover by Montana; infinity cover (tiny) (2/43)
Highest Graded
During WWII, many comic book publishers sold millions of comics with superheroes fighting Nazis or Japs or Japanazis. Archie Andrews was a different kind of comic character. His appearances in Pep Comics allowed teenagers to relate to a normal kid with normal problems that teens had (especially the dating variety). The gang from Riverdale provided much needed relief from the war effort that dominated the news. This issue marks Archie's first cover appearance.

Archie wasn't a total overnight sensation -- it took a few appearances for him to really cook -- but not long after his first go-round, he was stealing cover time from MLJ's hero stable, and this first cover appearance makes one feel a little badly for the Shield and Hangman, who couldn't help but know they were being shunted aside for a redheaded runt and his hottie gal pals. Sorry, Bentley of Scotland Yard, your day is nearly done. Seven decades on, the Archie gang is still instantly recognizable and beloved around the world -- this historic book is just the beginning of a long road of success and is a must-own for any Archie fanatic.

classic Matt Baker cvr/art; nudity panel
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
While the Phantom Lady covers have long been among comics' most beloved and acclaimed, it's only in recent years that artist Matt Baker has gained the widespread fame and acclaim he so richly deserves. Known for his exquisite linework and eyepopping yet sympathetic portrayals of beautiful women, Baker's historic status as one of the few black artists working in the mid-20th Century comic business has triggered a reevaluation of his standing in the pantheon of graphic artists. The scarcity of much of his work, especially in high grade, has fuelled the frenzy for collectors, and these covers are among the most sought-after.
To further entice the serious comic connoisseur, this is not only the highest-graded copy of this issue, but is also the Edgar Church/Mile High copy. We see a lot of very nice books here, but even we were taken aback by how well-preserved and handsome this copy is. This may be the hidden gem of this auction, and is certainly going to earn a lot of heat. Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $4,200; CGC census 1 in 9.6, none higher!

classic Matt Baker good girl cover; lingerie panel, bullet in head panel, something to please every taste
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Another in the series of classic Matt Baker cheesecake covers that makes this title so irresistible to collectors. Modern artists could learn a lot from the exaggerated anatomy in this cover, which is dramatic and stylized without losing definition or leaning into parody. From this image, one can immediately tell why Baker was revered amongst his peers for his composition, staging, and gift for drawing gorgeous yet subtly tough women.
This Mile High pedigree is the highest graded copy, making this an unbeatable investment and a grail for any serious Baker collector. Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $4,200; CGC census 3 in 9.4, none higher! br>

the Ultimate Good Girl Comic! classic cvr used in SOTI; Matt Baker cvr/art
A part of the Eisner & Iger Studio characters supplied to Quality Comics, the Phantom Lady was created by Arthur Peddy to be a female counterpart to pulpy crime fighters like the Shadow and the Sandman, a street-smart do-gooder aiming at crooks, crime bosses, and thugs. Initially clad in an alluring yet somewhat chaste yellow swimsuit and green cape, and with little characterization other than just being a crime-busting dame, the strip didn't really take off til it moved to Fox, where studio artist Matt Baker, together with staff writer Ruth Roche, gave the heroine not only more spunk and attitude, but an astoundingly risque outfit that played directly to Baker's strengths as the best Good Girl and cheesecake artist of the Golden Age of Comics. The low print runs of the book, along with the high number of copies destroyed by irate parents and hidden away by panic-stricken adolescents, have led to Baker's immortal PL covers becoming the most in-demand cape covers of the late Golden Age. This may well be his best-known and most-collected cover, for reasons that hardly bear pointing out to any fan of pin-up art. Baker, whose work was sadly unsung during his brief life and career, has become among the most acclaimed and revered of mid-century American illustrators, and his work grows in stature with each passing year, and his notable position as being among the precious few African-American artists regularly working in WWII-era comics lends gravitas to his extraordinary body of work. This may be the most coveted Good Girl art cover ever produced.

Matt Baker classic good girl cvr/art
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Another arresting good-girl cover by the legendary Matt Baker, this time not only grabbing the viewer with surprisingly erotic imagery, but also with its dramatic and poetic action pose. The aggressive red of the Phantom Lady's cape provides a strong backdrop to this, one of Baker's best-ever covers. In recent years, Baker's standing as one of comics' most gifted draftsmen has driven the value of these already-iconic PL covers sky-high. There are very few can't miss comics for investors. This is certainly one of them.
We're also delighted to note that this is the Mile High/Church pedigree copy of this beloved book, and is the highest-graded copy in CGC's census. Along with the PL 15, this is certain to generate a lot of heated bidding in this auction. Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $2,900; CGC census 2 in 9.4, none higher! br>

Classic Bondage cvr (tougher than #17); Matt Baker and Jack Kamen art
Ohio Copy
It can be argued that Phantom Lady comics of the 1940 s became more infamous for their tantalizing bondage covers and suggestive themes than they did for their actual stories. The passionate art of Matt Baker and Jack Kamen brought the Phantom Lady to life, capturing the attention of readers passing by newsstands.
April, 1949. This provocative bondage and headlight cover was the last of the Fox Features Phantom Lady series. Much rarer than the famous #17 cover from the same series, of which 51 copies have been graded by CGC, only 17 of this issue has passed through their hands.
This copy, with provenance from the Ohio Pedigree, is the single-most second-highest graded on the Census. Eat your heart out, boys!
