classic Frazetta cover; atomic explosion panels; last pre-code issue
Gaines File Copy
If you were asked to name the single most influential and best-known cover artist in the history of comics, your mind would likely go straight to Frank Frazetta. His muscular, dynamic style and astounding ability to create and define fantasy worlds and settings have influenced three generations of comic and fantasy artists. The look of science fiction and fantasy art as we know it today derives straight from the works of this extraordinary artist, who conquered not only the world of painting, but pencil and pen as well. This is inarguably his best-known comic book cover, an astonishing image initially drafted for his run of Famous Funnies Buck Rogers covers, but rejected by the family-friendly publisher as being too violent. Never one to shy away from pushing the envelope, EC's William Gaines snagged the cover for his Weird Science-Fantasy title, with Frazetta expertly reworking the image to remove any telltale signs that the central figure was once a rival company's hero. A virtually flawless example of how to use composition to create motion and action, some artists have created entire careers out of the lessons taught by this one incredible work, undoubtedly the ultimate sci-fi comic cover. Fittingly, this classic image acted as the swan song for the title, and in a way for EC's whole line, as within months, Gaines collapsed his entire company, under pressure from government meddling and industry panic, eventually publishing only Mad and a handful of magazine titles. Frazetta collectors and EC fan-addicts revere this cover, and rightly so. One of the few true masterpieces of comics history, this transcends genre and subject, and is an American icon.

rare! Lou Fine's 1st cover (later swiped by Bob Kane); giant gorilla cover
Among the top artists in the history of the comics business, highly respected among his Golden Age peers and a towering influence on American illustrators since, Lou Fine got his start, like most Golden Age greats, working at the Eisner-Iger studio, ghosting for overworked strip artists and contributing art to numerous strips that helped keep the hungry machine of early comics moving. Quickly rising to the top of his field, Fine's clean and confident line and graceful style changed the look of comics and stood out amongst the crude work churned out by so many small publishers. This, his first published cover, already shows the young Fine at the top of his game, vividly and carefully presenting what, in other hands, would be a rough and gimmicky image. Fox's spotty distribution led to a low number of surviving copies, making this a rare treat indeed.

origin Wonder Woman; Marston story, H.G. Peter cvr/art
Highest Graded
William Moulton Marston's complex comic creation was a vital addition to the superhero pantheon, a fearless feminist icon, equal parts warrior, diplomat, fetish object, and symbol of empowerment. Wonder Woman is one of the few Golden Age creations whose style and format were dead-on from the start, resulting in a nearly unbroken run of quality throughout the WWII-era. After her auspicious debut in All Star Comics 8, Wonder Woman grabbed her own cover and comic with Sensation Comics, her long running title that proved to be such a break-out success that DC introduced Wonder Woman 1 in the summer of 1942. This issue contains four tales of groundbreaking Golden Age heroine-ism, the first of which re-tells the character's origin story and her introduction to love interest Steve Trevor.

There's been plenty of debate over the quality of some of the recent additions to the DC Cinematic Universe. Everyone but the most jaded of hearts agrees that Gal Gadot's portrayal of Wonder Woman was a knockout. Her star turn has generated buzz in the world of geekdom, which is no easy feat. The Wonder Woman film is the sensational blockbuster we knew it would be., which will further serve to drive the value of this book.
This is tied for the second highest-graded copy of the CGC census, making this a doubly desirable copy of this red-hot key. Graced with bright yellows and deep black inks, this is a highly attractive copy. Copies of this issue have been commanding record-high values in recent auctions -- we expect big things for this one.

Overstreet Guide 2016 VF+ (8.5) value = $47,500.

Who knows why it took so long for Warner Brothers to get its act together and give this beloved character her own movie, but now that they have, man alive has it reignited interest in her comic appearances. This mid-grade copy should hit just the spot for anyone who wants a solid investment copy of this important key issue without having to empty out their savings. The classic central image is in very nice condition, making this an attractive centerpiece for any Wonder Woman or Golden Age key collection, and its relative scarcity as compared to other Golden Age first issues keeps it well in the must-have range for any collector. With the DCU exploding on screens and Warners heavily invested in keeping the franchise going, expect demand for this and other WW keys to continue to swell.

H.G Peter cvr/art; 1st app. of the Cheetah, extremely rare
And you thought modern supervillain origin stories were nuts? Check out the Cheetah, aka Priscilla Rich, a socialite and general all-around nutcase whose inspiration for crimesmithing was a split personality that manifests itself when Wonder Woman upstages her at a charity event. Her alter ego, the Cheetah, appears as a hallucination in a danged full length mirror, causing the already unstable Rich to go full-on bugnuts and dress in leopard print leotards and go straight up traitor, selling sensitive military secrets to the Axis powers. Told with William Moulston's usual propulsive prose and illustrated by H.G. Peter's florid, hypersurreal style, this is a neglected classic of the Golden Age, the kind of story that burned into young readers' brains and refused to let go. Later writers and artists would try to rework and reimagine the character's origins in later years, leaning into more mystic and fantastic realms, but the sheer unadulterated lunacy of this early gem is mighty hard to top. As with most early WW issues, this comic fell victim to wartime paper drives, spotty distribution, and neglect from boy comic hoarders who didn't like icky girl books (and boy were they wrong). As a result, it's insanely rare, maybe in the top five rarest Golden Age DC keys -- there are barely 50 copies on the census, and if more than 100 to 125 copies are in existence, I'd be shocked. And as a result of that, when copies do turn up, well, throw out the price guide, the sky's the limit.
The painfully few copies of this issue we've offered in recent years have been in low grade. This is the highest graded copy we've seen in twenty years. I think you can guess how bidding is going to go.
