Edd Ashe paints applied to a black and white stat of the published cover; recreated in 1978; 17" x 21"

Recreation pieces by Golden Age Masters are a very different thing to behold. These legends, by request, would resuscitate long-lost pieces whose originals may have been scrapped, shredded, or tossed out long ago by publishers too paranoid to realize the long-term value of their artistic prizes. In these instances, it's a true treat to see, for example, Murphy Anderson "covering" Lou Fine, or Irwin Hasen bringing the classic cover of Comic Cavalcade #1 back to life. In many instances, these gorgeous pieces, which Jon Berk lovingly commissioned throughout the 1980s and 1990s, may be among the last works of some of comics' finest draftsmen, making them doubly important to thoughtful art historians and collectors alike. With childlike wonder and obvious pride, these legendary giants of pencil and ink spent their twilight years showing off their still-considerable talents in this immortal medium with outsized collectors' pieces such as these, which graced the walls of Jon's personal comicbook museum for many years. Now, they pass on to another generation of comic lovers, who have the privilege of stepping back into the not-too-distant past thanks to these wonderful works. Note, also, the numerous original works heretofore unseen by collectors, which are sure to excite comic art fanatics.

Jack Binder pencils and inks; 1946; matted 15" x 20"
The Jon Berk Collection
After bouncing around New York City's comicbook industry for five years, journeyman artist Jack Binder started his own studio in 1942 which went on to employ over fifty artists, including a young Gil Kane and Carmine Infantino. Binder cut his teeth at Harry "A" Chesler, Fawcett, Lev Gleason, and Timely, during which time he created the original Daredevil, and even worked with upstart comic writer Stan Lee. Binder's studio churned out content for many of his previous employers, and this professionally designed cover piece is Binder's take on Fawcett's Bulletman, a character created by Bill Parker. Bulletman and his sidekick/paramour Bulletgirl would quickly rise to prominence in the publisher's stable, becoming their second-most-successful character after Parker's other hit, Captain Marvel. Golden Age art of this caliber rarely ever comes to market, and Binder's eye for graphic design and his sure hand elevate this piece above the general fare of the period.

Gus Ricca pencils and inks; 1942; matted 15" x 19.75"; Part of the Harry Chesler Collection
The Jon Berk Collection
Gus Ricca, an illustrator and commercial artist during the Golden Age, worked on Ibis the Invincible, Dynamic Man, and Captain Battle, who made his first appearance in Silver Streak #10 in 1941. Ricca did interior art for various early publishers as well as cover art for Scoop, Punch, and Dynamic comics, including this cover for Captain Battle #3. Many of his pieces evoke a chaotic Schomburg feel as exciting covers bolstered readership, and this Captain Battle cover has just that, excitement! The high-octane scene depicts our heroes lunging toward the bad guys to save the damsel in distress in this drama-filled composition.

After being injured in WWI, Captain Battle donned his jetpack, the "luceflyer" to combat Nazis in the hopes of preventing WWII. In 2013 an exceptionally low budget Captain Battle film was made, likely intending to capitalize on the success of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

The beautiful Gus Ricca inks are a hallmark of their time, and this piece would make an excellent addition to any comic art collection.

If you are a new customer planning to make a first-time purchase over $25,000, please contact us 24 hours in advance of the item closing at 212.895.3999 or support@comicconnect.com so that we may approve your account for bidding.
