Pg. 23; Jack Kirby pencils, Sol Brodsky inks; 1962; matted 16.5" x 22.5"
The Jon Berk Collection
Part of "Chapter V The Final Challenge!" Miracle Man is defeated but at the cost of the Human Torch leaving the Fantastic Four.

Inspired by DC's top-selling team of heroes, the Justice League of America, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby decided to do one better when tasked with creating a copycat title for Marvel. Instead of a mash up of existing heroes, Lee and Kirby struck upon the novel concept of creating a super-family, allowing young readers to instantly identify with the day-to-day trials and tribulations of the protagonists while still enjoying liberal doses of sci-fi heroism. Fantastic Four #3 features the first appearances of the Miracle Man and also the Baxter building, the headquarters of the Fantastic Four. This page concludes issue #3 and is a gorgeous piece in outstanding condition. Jack Kirby pencils and Sol Brodsky inks make this an essential piece of Marvel history. The classic Kirby style showcased in such a great example of everyone's favorite fighting family is the quintessence of early Marvel productions.

Dick Ayers & his son Rich Ayers pencils, inks and watercolor; 1963; recreated in 2000; 16" x 21.75"; COA included, signed by Dick & Rich Ayers
The Jon Berk Collection
Recreation pieces by Golden Age Masters are a very different thing to behold. These legends, by request, would resuscitate long-lost pieces whose originals may have been scrapped, shredded, or tossed out long ago by publishers too paranoid to realize the long-term value of their artistic prizes. In these instances, it's a true treat to see, for example, Murphy Anderson "covering" Lou Fine, or Irwin Hasen bringing the classic cover of Comic Cavalcade #1 back to life. In many instances, these gorgeous pieces, which Jon Berk lovingly commissioned throughout the 1980s and 1990s, may be among the last works of some of comics' finest draftsmen, making them doubly important to thoughtful art historians and collectors alike. With childlike wonder and obvious pride, these legendary giants of pencil and ink spent their twilight years showing off their still-considerable talents in this immortal medium with outsized collectors' pieces such as these, which graced the walls of Jon's personal comicbook museum for many years. Now, they pass on to another generation of comic lovers, who have the privilege of stepping back into the not-too-distant past thanks to these wonderful works. Note, also, the numerous original works heretofore unseen by collectors, which are sure to excite comic art fanatics.

Pg. 18; "The Merciless Puppet Master" Jack Kirby pencils, Dick Ayers inks; 1963; 18" x 24.5"
Featuring the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch and the Thing
The Jon Berk Collection
The action in these classic Jack Kirby Fantastic Four panels portrays Namor squaring off against the Human Torch and the Thing; a direct result of the evil machinations of the Puppet Master, who is manipulating the Sub-Mariner to exact revenge on the FF. The thrilling battle is one of the preeminent examples of "King" Kirby in his prime. Two of Marvel's Golden Age powerhouses are showcased alongside the new fan favorite in a hyperkinetic piece that zings. It's pieces like this, this muscular, bruising display of a super-showdown that got the nascent Silver Age boom ba-DOOMING. Observant art lovers can almost witness the progression of Kirby's style on this page, drawing from his past glories depicting motion and power, but also foreshadowing his growing penchant for strange devices and the bizarre sci-fi tropes that would define his future work.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. of the Skrulls; 2nd Fantastic Four
The Jon Berk Collection
Who knew that the need for a faddish, sci-fi based villain would result in storylines and mythology spanning across decades? It wasn't as though Lee and Kirby were consciously creating a pop-culture world in the rocky days of early Silver Age Marvel, they were just trying to make fun comics that would sell and attract readers -- but, by following the hyperactive lead of their imaginative audience, they developed a language and style and mythos that carries on to this day, to the movies and beyond. This first appearance of the Skrulls hints at the grandeur and go-for-broke glee of the Marvel Universe to come. A 9.6 copy of Fantastic Four 2? The first appearance of the Skrulls? A classic cover illustration by Jack Kirby? Signed by one Mr. Stan Lee? What are you waiting for? This book is just screaming to be picked up and bought home and placed within the collection of some lucky Fantastic Four fan and marveled at for years to come. Just wait until the franchise is properly rebooted on the silver screen and watch the value skyrocket.

Kirby cvr/art; first costumes & established headquarters
The Jon Berk Collection
This is not the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but it is an issue filled to the brim with firsts. This issue marks the first appearance of the FF's costumes, which can turn invisible, stretch to incredible lengths, resist powerful flames, and allow Ben Grimm a relaxing day at the beach. This issue also debuts the location of the super-team's headquarters, the design of their Fantasti-car, and even features the first time Stan Lee refers to the series as "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World". Notably, this issue is also the first to feature an FF fan mail section, the first step in Lee's creation of the Mighty Marvel Fan Base. The vintage Jack Kirby cover design uses the sharp, stark grays of the New York City skyline to highlight the bright reds of Johnny Blaze's flames and the pristine white of the brand new Fantasti-car.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st SA Sub-Mariner
The Jon Berk Collection
In the spirit of recycling, both DC and Marvel dusted off and rethought their classic Golden Age characters in the rough-and-tumble marketplace of the early Silver Age, including one of the most intriguing and unusual of all Timely creations, the fearsome Sub-Mariner. While the Golden Age Namor was a pulpy, tortured anti-hero, the Silver Age Namor was more aggressively antagonistic, with his antipathy the FF exacerbated by his longing for the fetching Sue Storm. In this first Silver Age appearance of this distinctive character, Lee and Kirby ratchet up the action and drama to a hyperbolic degree, firmly establishing this series as one of the most gloriously inventive of all Silver Age Marvel titles.

origin and 1st app. Doctor Doom; bondage cover (7/62)
The Jon Berk Collection
Doom, according to Jack "The King" Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age's envisioning of Death, hence the hood. Kirby claims that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil. As a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of the greatest and most complex villains ever created in the world of comics and he first appears here in Fantastic Four # 5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan "The Man" Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as the inspiration for Darth Vader.

Kirby cvr/art; 3rd SA Sub-Mariner app.
The Jon Berk Collection
It's typical of the hard-bitten, cynical world of Silver Age Marvel to show the heroes right on the cover of their own book being turned out of their digs and jeered by crowds. It's also a sign of the clever way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could turn everyday drabness into imaginative gold, almost as though they were thinking big by going small. It had certainly had never been tried before, so readers were turned on by the originality and audacity of Marvel's ideas, and stuck around for the strong storytelling and attention-grabbing art. This is only the third appearance of the Sub-Mariner in the Silver Age, and Lee and Kirby have already transformed him completely from a brooding romantic demigod into a snarling, almost completely adversarial despot. Readers loved it.

Kirby cvr/art; Lee & Kirby appear in story; Dr. Doom app.
The Jon Berk Collection
By the time of this issue's appearance, Stan Lee's plan to remake the struggling Marvel into an industry powerhouse was gaining steam and support. Part of the reason for this success was his willingness to treat the Marvel bullpen as stars in their own right, culminating in this clever and beloved issue in which Lee and Kirby guest star in their own popular comic. It was both a winking in-joke meant to appeal to regular readers, and an unmistakable gauntlet thrown down to competitors that Marvel had arrived.

origin & 1st app. of Impossible Man; FF origin retold

One of the first indicators that Lee and Kirby were pushing the FF book beyond the boundaries of standard hero comics was the appearance of the Impossible Man, a character intended largely as a comic foil and prankster. Kirby cvr/art; 1st Hulk vs Thing battle
The Jon Berk Collection
A match made in adolescent boy heaven, it was only a matter of time before Lee and Kirby took their two most popular creations and set them against each other to see what would happen. The result, unsurprisingly, was a smash success, leading to nearly annual throwdowns between the two misunderstood behemoths. This first contretemps occured while the nascent Hulk was still in his initial, reasonably intelligent phase, making him an even more formidable opponent for the streetwise scrapping Thing. The reduction of the green goliath in later years to a monosyllabic brute made the recurring battles less and less challenging and more like a standard-issue monster mash, but this classic first meeting still retains its punch and excitement, and fans young and old still feel the old tingle when encountering this classic image.

Kirby cvr; classic Kirby/Ditko art; 1st Watcher
The Jon Berk Collection
An unusual treat awaited readers within the pages of this issue, as the lively, kinetic inks of Steve Ditko met the ferocious, muscular figures and layouts of Jack "The King" Kirby. In addition, Lee and Kirby once again upped the ante on strange goings-on by introducing the Watcher, one of the most intriguing meta-creations of the Marvel Silver Age, whose influence over the series' galactic ambitions would only increase as time went on and would lead directly to the legendary Galactus /Surfer saga of later years. For some reason, this is one of the scarcer early FF issues, especially in nice condition.

Sub-Mariner app.; bondage cover by Kirby & Ditko
The Jon Berk Collection
Steve Ditko slips in to provide inks for this classic and dynamic cover featuring Prince Namor facing off against our heroes. The Sub-Mariner's constant obsession with stealing Sue Storm away from Reed Richards may seem bizarre by modern readers' standards, but it was the easiest and fastest way to humanize the otherwise off-putting Namor for contemporary audiences -- and besides, who wouldn't want to steal her away from that workaholic stuffed shirt?
