Dr. Doom makes his first appearance in Fantastic Four #5, instantly creating a top Silver Age collectible with the emergence of one of Marvel's most important villains. Of course, the deathly countenance of the Latverian ruler had roots in the Golden Age. Jack Kirby's design (and Stan Lee's complex characterization) still made Victor Von Doom one of the most influential pop-culture figures of the past 60 years.

Dr. Doom was soon a major Marvel presence outside of Fantastic Four, with Latveria becoming a destination for every hero from Thor to Luke Cage. Doom would even dominate the first Secret Wars saga on a planet populated by all of Marvel's favorites. (Mark Hamill confirmed the character's massive impact, recalling that his reaction to Darth Vader when first reading the Star Wars script was, “It’s Doctor Doom!”) A 2024 Doom one-shot comic quickly sold out in the shops. Fans also anxiously await Marvel Studios' revival of a Fantastic Four film franchise, eager to see Von Doom's debut within the official Marvel Cinematic Universe.
