Charlton Comics' The Thing! only managed 17 issues from 1952 to 1954. That was long enough for the book's "weird tales of suspense and horror" to launch Steve Ditko's career. The legendary artist made his debut as a cover illustrator with this historic issue #12, and also does pencils and inks on the vampiric riff on "Cinderella." Ditko would go on to illustrate four out of the five remaining covers in The Thing's historic run, guaranteeing that collectors would always keep The Thing! in demand for his wild early work.
This striking 7.0 cover vibrantly captures all the colorful madness of Ditko's vampiric vision. The strong focal center also does a fine job (after 70 years!) of showing how Ditko was inspired by legendary artist Mort Meskin to use a chaotic close-up to create a compelling sense of depth in his four-color world.
