ComicConnect Newsletter #24: Event Auction Opening Bell Can't see everything? View this newsletter on the web.

THE EVENT AUCTION HAS BEGUN!

Start your engines!  COMICCONNECT’S EVENT AUCTION roared into action Friday, April 17th at 12 PM, and lots are now open for bidding!

Headlining the auction is the unrestored ACTION COMICS #1 CGC 1.8. Fresh on the heels of the highly-publicized, record-breaking $317,200 auction sale for a rare copy of Action Comics #1 – the ensuing news that spread across the globe has made the unbelievable happen: Another original-owner copy of Action Comics #1 has been found that has never been brought to market.

“It’s simply unheard of these days for undiscovered copies of Action Comics #1 to surface,” stated Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com.  “Due to all the press surrounding last month’s sale [the most a comic book has ever sold for at auction], we received thousands of calls and emails from people who had reprints that they thought were original.  One of those calls stood out among the rest – and suddenly we realized the unthinkable had happened and lightning had struck twice.”

“An older gentleman called from the Midwest regarding a comic book he and his brother, as young boys, purchased off the newsstand in 1938,” added Vincent Zurzolo, ComicConnect.com’s COO. “Sadly, his brother passed away last autumn, but the two had kept the comic for over 70 years. The man has decided to bring the comic book to market by consigning it to ComicConnect’s current Event Auction.”

That’s not the only major key comic in the auction.  ComicConnect is very pleased to bring these heavy-hitting rarities to you!

Below is just a small sample of even more grail comic books that can be bid upon in the auction!

Be sure to check out the articles below spotlighting the incredible, slabbed, Mary Marvel Comics run in the Event Auction, the beautiful array of Romance comics, and a very rare collection of original Superman memoribilia.

As always, ComicConnect.com does not charge buyer’s premiums.  Winners pay the hammer price  plus shipping (and sales tax only if they live in the State of NY).  The Event Auction will conclude in three separate sessions ending May 1st, 2nd & 3rd between 7 PM – 12 AM EDT.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Romance comics have been doing very well in recent ComicConnect.com auctions. We were very pleased to receive a consignment of over 40 Gold & Silver Age CGC and PGX graded romance comics, including many difficult to find Matt Baker books,” stated ComicConnect.com COO, Vincent Zurzolo. “Titles included in the collection are Cinderella Love, Diary Secrets, Falling in Love, Girl Confessions, Pictorial Romances and Teen-Age Romances.”

“The consignor worked tirelessly to assemble this collection, which includes grades as high as 9.4. There are several comics I have never seen before and many I’ve seen in only low-grade condition at best. The consignor understood the demand for these books would be high and confidently decided to put them up for sale at $1.00 start prices and no reserves” exclaimed ComicConnect.com, CEO, Stephen Fishler.

THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT MARY... MARVEL THAT IS!

ComicConnect.com is proud to offer a complete run of CGC & PGX Mary Marvel Comics as one lot in this current Event Auction ending May 1st – 3rd. The run was put together by a serious and passionate collector from the Midwest. This was an extremely challenging run for him to complete as the print runs on later issues were particularly small. 21 of the 28 issues are either the Highest Graded or 2nd Highest Graded copies in the market.

Mary Marvel was created by Otto Binder and Marc Swayze in 1942. Artist Marc Swayze based Mary Marvel's design and personality upon American actress Judy Garland. She is the alter ego of teenager Mary Batson (adopted name Mary Bromfield), twin sister of Captain Marvel's alter-ego, Billy Batson. Like her brother, Mary has been granted the power of the wizard Shazam and has but to speak the wizard's name to be transformed into the super-powered Mary Marvel. Mary Marvel was one of the first female spin-offs of a major male superhero, and predates the introduction of Superman's female cousin Supergirl (also created by Otto Binder) by more than a decade.

“This is a great way to put together a complete, unrestored, slabbed, high-grade collection of Mary Marvel. Save the time of having to scour countless conventions, hours of wading through online listings only to come up empty-handed, by buying a complete run. This is your one stop shopping for Mary Marvel!” stated ComicConnect.com COO, Vincent Zurzolo.

GET A PIECE OF THE ACTION... LITERALLY!

ComicConnect.com Event Auctions is now the point of destination for all things Action #1 related.

Vincent Zurzolo, ComicConnect.com COO, mentions, “There was so much media coverage world-wide before, during and after our last Event Auction that featured an Action #1 CGC 6.0, which sold for a world record $317,200.00, that we have been contacted almost daily about other Action #1s. Most have been reprints of one sort or another. However, we did acquire one original owner which will be offered in our upcoming May 1-3 Event Auction. And just recently we were contacted by a couple from the New England area who had uncovered a piece of what they believed to be the front cover.”

Stephen Fishler, ComicConnect.com CEO and Zurzolo confirmed it was truly an original part of an Action #1 and CGC encapsulated what they have termed 3/5 of the front cover. “While the logo is missing, the piece features the most memorable part of Action #1, the image of Superman about to throw the car! This is the perfect item for the collector who might not spend six figures for a comic, but wants a piece of comic history-quite literally,” stated Fishler.

The consignor explained how it came into his possession and how he came to contact ComicConnect.com. He was reading the USA Today and came across the article about the 6.0 Action Comics #1. He recognized the image of Superman hurling the car and recalled seeing it in his father’s old things. Unfortunately, his dad had passed on some years ago, but he decided to rummage through his father ’s keepsakes and came across this item. As it turned out, his dad had been an avid comic collector in the 30s and 40s. During WW II, he left for Europe to fight in the army and upon his return found his parents had thrown out his collection. He was very upset. It is believed that the father had somehow hung onto the cover and kept it with his postcard collection… and that is exactly where his son found it.

EARLY SIEGEL & SHUSTER, SUPERMAN & BUCK ROGERS MEMORIBILIA AT AUCTION NOW

A collector of Siegel and Shuster, Superman and Buck Rogers memorabilia has consigned a number of very rarely seen items currently open for bidding in the ComicConnect Event Auction.

One of the items is a Superman Action Comics Prize Ring from 1940. This ring is even rarer than an Action Comics #1, as it is one of only eight known to exist. Another one of the items is a Superman Candy Secret Compartment Ring from 1940, which contains a red, white & blue paper image of Superman!

Fans of Siegel and Shuster will also appreciate the ultra-rare Science Fiction Fanzine #4 the two wrote in 1933 -- it even includes their review of King Kong the movie.

The lots also include a very early Adventures of Superman novel published by Random House in 1942, just four years after the character’s debut in comics. Making this piece even more special is an original sketch by Joe Shuster himself on the first page!

Also be sure to check out this seller’s Buck Rogers consignments. The first is an original artwork Buck Rogers pen & ink portrait by Dick Calkins. It is a very classic and striking Golden Age image – definitely worthwhile to behold. The other Buck Rogers piece is a glow-in-the-dark light bulb ring from 1953 used to promote Sylvania Halolight televisions!

FEATURED AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART: OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY!

On May 7, 2008, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City held an exhibit called "Superheroes: Fashion & Fantasy” showcasing the connection between Superhero costumes and fashion. The exhibit, which included the costumes from a variety of Superhero movies and fashion designs from Armani and other designers, along with a small collection of vintage comics, was a huge success. Now these very comics are available for public bidding during the May 1-3 ComicConnect.com Event Auction.

“It is with great pride ComicConnect.com presents these comics exhibited in the highly viewed Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy of 2008. The exhibit examined the influence on fashion of the costumes of superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Captain America, Hulk, The Punisher, Iron Man, Ghost Rider and Spider-Man as represented in comic books, film and television. I am very proud to have had comic books exhibited in the Met, the premiere museum in the United States. Each comic will come with a Certificate of Authenticity” ComicConnect.com’s COO, Vincent Zurzolo stated.

The following comics, Amazing Fantasy #15, Batman #42, Detective #33, Fantastic Four #51, Flash Comics #1 and Marvel Spotlight #5 will be up for auction and can be viewed at ComicConnect.com/MET
