classic witch cover
Since the first appearance of Superman in Action Comics #1, Lois Lane has been the main love interest of the Man of Steel for over eight decades, at the dawn of the Silver Age, DC used their anthology title Showcase to introduce new characters, and reboot Golden Age heroes, to great acclaim; it could be said the title single-handedly launched the renewed superhero craze of the Silver Age, putting DC back in the catbird seat, and opening the door for the Marvel Age as well. The success of Flash, Green Lantern, Atom and others are well documented, but the roots of Superman’s extended universe also have Showcase to thank for their launching. After a few tryout issues, Lois was given her own book, which at one point was the third-highest selling comic in the world, after Superman and Superboy. Making an obvious play to expand their readership to the female segment of the population, DC hit a home run, as Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane would go on to run for 137 issues, with a growing socially conscious message being added in during the turbulent 60s. In this premiere issue, a popular, valuable comic, which is very hard to find in high grade, the stories revolve around Superman pranking, tricking and generally treating Lois Lane at the butt of his jokes in three different scenarios. The Curt Swan cover is a classic, with its witchy theme, the series gets off to a spooky start. A perennial favorite of DC collectors and a comic no serious Superman fan should be without.

Artists Information

Swan was a house artist at DC working on titles like Tommy Tomorrow, he began gravitating towards Superman and his related books, Superboy, World's Finest and Jimmy Olsen, he would eventually leave DC thanks to his personality issue with Editor In Chief Mort Weisinger. He would eventually return and go on to be the artist that defined the look of Superman in the Silver Age, eventually becoming the editor of the title, but after thirty years of keeping up standards of all things Superman, Swan was given the boot in favor of John Byrne's Superman reboot, Swan's comic work began to taper off after this dismissal and he eventually retired, but will forever be recognized as the Silver Age Superman's finest artist.

Kurt Schaffenberger's first job in comics came in June of 1941, when he was assigned to inking backgrounds for a 'Captain Marvel' story for Fawcett. After the war, Schaffenberger joined the studio of C.C. Beck and Pete Costanza, and his work expanded by becoming a featured artist on 'Ibis the Invincible', also by Fawcett. Schaffenberger was hired by DC Comics in 1957 to become the artist on 'Lois Lane'. From there, Schaffenberger became a regular contributor to the entire Superman comics line. He later became a frequent artist on the anthology series 'The Superman Family'. Schaffenberger also created artwork for DC's Shazam! series after C.C. Beck's departure. In 1968, Kurt Schaffenberger succeeded Jim Mooney as the artist on the 'Supergirl' feature.
