Win Mortimer cvr; 1st app. and death of The Man With Nine Lives; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 6 (CBI)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded"The Outlaw Who Had Nine Lives" is Paul Gregorian, the man emerging from an inferno on the cover of Detective #172, he stymies the Dynamic Duo for a while with his apparent immortality, but once his gimmick is revealed (he's a magician) he ends up jumping to his death to avoid capture by Batman and Robin. This twist ending is a bit of shock, but in the freewheeling days before the CCA comic books walked the thin line between children's entertainment and adult themes with impunity. Just a short three years later this book would have been deemed unacceptable due to inappropriate content. This is a late Golden Age Detective issue that hearkens back to Batman's noir roots.
Hailing from the Mile High/Edgar Church pedigree, this copy of Detective Comics #172 is the highest graded on the CGC census, and like most Mile High books the colors are deliriously vivid, the cover is immaculate, and the spine and corners are as fresh as the day they rolled off the printing press.
Overstreet Guide 2018 NM- (9.2) value = $1,400.
