sl brittle bottom corners

Gill Fox cut his teeth at Fleischer Studios, which forever influenced his finely detailed, character-heavy work, especially during his tenure as an in-demand cover artist for Quality publications, a comic house not exactly known for its dearth of talented artists. Fox remains one of the unheralded greats of the Golden Age of comics, as his unpretentious, reliable style never lent itself to flash or brashness, but was never less than immaculately crafted and intricately detailed.

This wonderful cover, featuring cult classic Stormy Foster effortlessly and acrobatically defeating his beefy opponents, is one of the few surviving original pieces from Quality's remarkable output. Fox's animation background is clearly visible in the careful squashing and stretching of the nefarious pair bookending our hero, as their postures manage to show almost cartoonish motion without losing a very real sense of anatomy and proportion. The strength of Stormy's muscle strain is almost palpable. With so many of the cover's little touches obscured by eye-catching color in its printed form, it's a real treat to see Fox's supple line work unadorned and up close. Even on "minor" characters such as these, illustrators like Fox refused to settle for second best when working for Quality, and this delightful example is a joy to behold.
