The creators of Captain America Comics were never ones to shy away from controversial topics, as was evinced on the cover of issue #1 of the series, Nazis being a favorite whipping boy, but other hate groups such as the American Bund, and in this issue, they seemingly take aim at the Ku Klux Klan, in the form of the villain, the White Death, who dons the familiar robe and hood while dispensing with his nefarious deeds. The not-so-subtle way Cap Comics dealt with the horrors of the times loomed large in the American psyche and helped pull the country through one of its most-tumultuous times. The typically thrilling Kirby cover is another in a long line of iconic illustrations from this historic series.
